There were two other sons – seven-year-old Walter born in Withen and one-year-old Frank born in Wootton. Both Walter and Frank served.
GEORGE HENRY DEAN
Born in Wootton in 1882
Son of Robert and Sarah Ann Dean
I can’t confirm with certainty date or location of death. There are two possibilities:
1 George Henry Dean, Rifle Brigade, died 8 October 1918, commemorated at the Vis-en-Artois Memorial
2 George Henry Dean, acting bombardier, Royal Field Artillery, died 4 September 1916, commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial
Background The 1891 census reveals eight-year-old Wootton-born George living with his parents - Robert, a 49-year-old agricultural labourer born in Thornton Curtis, and Sarah Ann, aged 44 from Wootton. George had a sister, Annie Eliza who is five years older than him. By 1901, 19-year-old George was working as a groom and residing at The Mill, Appleby, as the boarder of Frederick Tansley (aged 28, from Bedfordshire) and his wife, Edith (aged 32, from Warwickshire).

Background John Patrick Skipworth was born in the Lincolnshire village of Cadney in 1887. In 1891, four-year-old John and his parents lived at Cadney Farm House in Howsham. John’s father, Thomas (aged 48) was born in Normaby le Wold and his mother, Edith (aged 46), was from Somerby. John had a sister named Edith who was two years older than her brother. However, given the age of the parents, it's likely that they had a bigger family who had by the time of the census had fled the family home and were working elsewhere. In 1891, the family had a servant, Maryann Smith. Ten years later in 1901, John turns up a boarder being educated at the Royal Asylum of St Anne’s Society at Streatham Hill in what was then Surrey, but is now part of London. This school was set up to educate the children of people who had fallen upon hard times.
