HARRY BOLTON

Background

Harry was born in 1878, the son of Charles Conrad Bolton and his wife Charlotte. Charles was in charge of the Waterloo Inn in the village of Laceby. By the time of the 1901 census, Charles had died and Harry was no longer living at home. Charlotte, as a 44-year-old widow, had taken over as innkeeper and lived at the pub with five of her children - Elizabeth (24), Charles (14), Frank (11), Lucy (seven) and Emily (two). Apart from Elizabeth - who was born in Grimsby - all the children were born in Laceby. Charles worked as an assitant clerk with the Great Central Railway.

While details about Harry are scarce, there is quite a lot on his brother, Charles.

On 15 October 1902, Charles decided to enlist with the Army. He was 5ft 5 3/8in tall and had dark brown hair and grey eyes.

When Charles enlisted, he names his next of kin as his mother and brothers Frank and Harry, at the Waterloo Inn in Laceby.

In 1903, Charles completed his training to be a medical orderly in Aldershot.

While based in Tipperary in Ireland, Private Bolton was found guilty of irregular conduct. On 17 September 1914, he was 'found in bed with a female in a hospital ward about 10pm'.

He served for three years as a private in the Royal Army Medical Corps before being transferred to the reserves in October 1905.

In 1908, Charles married Annie Ingleton in Old Clee. The couple had at least four childdren - Charles junior (21 October 1908), Frank Clifton (15 August 1910), Julie Alicia (10 October 1911) and George Arthur (24 September 1913).

Following the start of the war, reservist Charles was quickly called up and joined the British Expeditionary Force in August 1914 sailing to France from Southampton on 18 August that year. He arrived in Rouen on 20 August.

However, he caught flu and was hospitalised on 4 February 1915. He was discharged from hospital on 13 February.

He returned to England on 7 October 1915.
