SHONA IS CELEBRATING 3,039 HOMES BEING MADE WARMER in the constituency of Cleethorpes by the Warm Front Scheme. She congratulates the scheme in the way it is tackling fuel poverty and is urging more residents to come forward and get help with measures that could cut their energy bills by as much as £600 a year. Warm Front provides grants of up to £3,500 towards insulation and gas heating measures as well as £6,000 for oil heating to low income families, the elderly and people with disabilities. More than £4.5 million has been invested...
  • REMEMBERING THE FALLEN: SHONA'S WAR MEMORIAL DEBATE
21 October 2009 War Memorials Motion made, and Question proposed, That this House do now adjourn. -(Mr. Blizzard.) 7.17 pm Shona McIsaac (Cleethorpes) (Lab): I thank Mr. Speaker for allowing me to address the House on the subject of the nation's war memorials as the annual poppy appeal is launched. My interest in war memorials began some time ago. My late father served 25 years in the armed forces, and one of his postings was to NATO headquarters in Belgium. My father organised family outings to visit the war memorials in that part of Belgium and northern France to seek...
  • CRACK DOWN ON ANTI-SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR
NE LINCOLNSHIRE HAS BEEN ASKED by the Government to do more to tackle anti-social behaviour. But I'm sorry to say that it feels as if the powers are not being used to...
  • STOP LOAN SHARKS NOW
A NEW INITIATIVE TO TARGET LOAN SHARKS in North East Lincolnshire, has been backed by Shona McIsaac. The Stop Loan Sharks campaign - which is funded by the Government - aims to get people out of the hands of illegal money lenders who fund luxury lifestyles on debts that people can never pay off because of extortionate levels of interest. The campaign was launched on Friday at the Parkway Cinema in Cleethorpes. Explaining why she supported the campaign, Shona said: 'The case of Paul Nicholson demonstrates the evil that can surround loan sharks. He is currently in prison having been...
  • IT'S CRUELTY FREE FOR ME
SHONA MCISAAC HAS PLEDGED HER SUPPORT for Vote Cruelty Free - a new non-partisan coalition of animal protection charities working to put animals on the political agenda. The alliance has sent its manifesto to all candidates for the next General Election and asked them to show their support for the issues raised. Signing up to the campaign at Labour's annual conference in Brighton, Shona said: 'Animal welfare remains the biggest issue in my postbag and email inbox. Whether it's hunting, the ivory trade, farm animal welfare, circuses, greyhounds, the fur trade, animal experiments and a whole host of other great...
  • PRAISE FOR FREE PARKING
SHONA MCISAAC HAS WELCOMED a promise to end hospital car parking charges. If you are on a fixed income, the parking charges are a cost you can do without. If you need to park for more than 40 minutes, the minimum charge is £1.50. And if you are visiting someone who is in hospital for a long stay, the costs really mount up. I know of people who would love to visit more often, but can’t afford it. In our area, this is especially true if you have to cross the Humber Bridge for regular cancer treatment...
  • GET ON BOARD, SHONA TELLS THE BRIDGE BOARD
THE HUMBER BRIDGE BOARD should work with MPs, councils and business organisations as part of the campaign to reduce Humber Bridge tolls. Speaking after news emerged that the Bridge Board were seeking legal advice following the Government's recent announcement that it was not supporting the Board's application to increase tolls, Shona McIsaac accused them of muddying the waters. 'I'm appalled that the Bridge Boards are acting in this way. Threatening legal action and saying that council tax will have to increase to fund the bridge is complete nonsense. 'They should be working with the areas MPs and councils as part...
  • DON'T LOSE YOUR VOTE
SHONA IS ENCOURAGING YOUNG PEOPLE to remember to register to vote. Commenting, Shona said: 'It's surprising how many people think that they're automatically put on the resister of electors because they have reached 18 or pay council tax. This isn't the case. At this time of year, councils across the country, send a form to all households asking them to register to vote. Sometimes, people think this is a piece of junk mail and throw it out. I almost did last year. The people most likely not to register to vote are younger age groups. That's why I'm encouraging young...
  • CLIMATE CHANGE CAMPAIGN
SHONA MCISAAC IS ADDING HER NAME to a new campaign to try to cut the country's carbon emissions. The campaign, called 10:10, has been devised by the people who made the climate change film the Age of Stupid - a call to arms for all those who want to save the planet. 10:10 gives people, schools, organisations businesses and councils the chance to do their bit to reduce the carbon emissions by working out how they can cut the amount of CO2 they produce by 10 per cent in 2010. Shona commented: 'I'm signing up to the 10:10 campaign because...
  • GCSE SUCCESS
SHONA HAS SENT HER CONGRATULATIONS TO SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES following the success of this year's GCSE results. ON EXAM SUCCESSES. Following on from the excellent A level results, Shona has contacted schools and colleges to say how pleased she is with to this year's GCSE and A Level results. In her message to headteachers, principals, students and teaching staff, Shona said: 'Good results are the product of hard work and commitment by young people combined with excellent teaching. So I want to congratulate everyone for their achievements. 'I have, however, felt disheartened by the vocal minority who have continued...
  • DON'T RESTRICT UNIVERSITY PLACES
SHONA MCISAAC HAS CONDEMNED PEOPLE who are calling for a reduction in university places. Writing in her blog, I Digress, Shona commented: Just as I refuse to join in with those who say that A levels are easy these days, I don't agree with the people who say that too many young people go to university. Surely it can't be wrong to open up university education? Restricting numbers - as happened when I went - would make university as an exclusive club for the minority. While privately educated young people are a minority in this country, they form a much...
  • PRAISE FOR A LEVEL RESULTS
SHONA MCISAAC HAS CALLED ON PEOPLE TO STOP BELITTLING exam success and achievement. Her comments came as this year's A level results hit the headlines. 'It seemed as soon as the results were released, detractors started criticising the success of young people by saying that the exams had got easier. 'I won't join in with the grumpy brigade's dark mutterings about dumbing down. Because it's utter rubbish to say that because more people have got A grades at A levels the exams aren't as difficult as they used to be.' Shona has also called into question Tory plans to give...
  • TORIES SHOULD QUIT
SHONA MCISAAC IS CALLING FOR TWO TOP TORIES TO QUIT THEIR JOBS in the Conservative health team over their links with companies that promote private health care. The Times newspaper (19 August 2009) revealed that former surgeon, Lord McColl, is a non-executive chairman of Endeavour Health. The company funds private GPs in direct competition with the NHS. Charging £60 to £100 to see a GP and up to £160 for a home visit, an undercover Times journalist reported that when he contacted the service saying he was concerned about swine flu, he was charged £99 and then told to contact...
  • POLICE STATION 'WON'T CLOSE'
POLICE CHIEFS HAVE SAID THAT THERE IS NO TRUTH IN THE RUMOUR that Cleethorpes Police Station is to be closed down. They have sought to reassure the public that the Princess Road station will remain in use as an operational police station, following claims that the station may close. However, several weeks ago, a decision was taken to remove the counter service that was available at the station. The police have stated that the counter service, which was open for the public three days a week – Monday, Friday and Saturday – was rarely used. Research revealed...
  • TOLL INCREASE REJECTED
TOLL INCREASE REJECTEDTRANSPORT MINISTERS HAVE THROWN OUT PLANS TO INCREASE HUMBER BRIDGE TOLLS to £2.90 per crossing. This is the first time that a request to increase the tolls has been dismissed by ministers. The anouncement comes after a year-long cross-party battle supported by MPs, councils, businesses, residents and campaign groups. In Parliament, MPs from the south bank have been persistent in saying that the tolls mustn’t go up any further. Speaking on hearing the news, Shona said: 'The minister's office contacted me to say that a decision had been reached to throw out the plans to increase the tolls. In his...
  • PROTECT WAR MEMORIALS
BRITAIN'S WAR MEMORIALS ARE UNDER THREAT from planners and developers, claim a cross-party group of MPs. A group of MPs has backed a House of Commons motion expressing concern that war memorial are risk because they are not protected in law. Shona is one of the MPs backing the calls to preserve and protect the thousands of war memorials by setting up a national register. She also wants to see planning laws changed, so that war memorials can’t be demolished or removed. 'Our troops are under huge pressure in Afghanistan at the moment and so many young lives...
  • DON'T PUT UP TOLLS
SHONA HAS DEMANDED THAT THE GOVERNMENT doesn't approve of any increase in Humber Bridge tolls. In the final debate before Parliament rose for the recess, Shona took the opportunity to stress that tolls were already too high and that it would be wrong to increase tolls. She also urged ministers to agree to a trial of lower tolls. Speaking in the House of Commons, Shona said: ‘There was an inquiry into Humber Bridge tolls in March. The Bridge Board wanted to put up the tolls, but local MPs are saying that we do not that to happen and that...
  • TRAWLERMEN'S COMPENSATION: DATE SET
THE NEW SCHEME TO COMPENSATE FORMER ICELANDIC WATER TRAWLERMEN for the loss of their livelihoods following the Cod Wars will be open for applications from 31 July 2009. The date was revealed in a statement made to Parliament today. 'This is really welcome news,' said Shona, who has been campaigning on behalf of former trawlermen. 'It means that an estimated 1,000 people will be awarded compensation - adding £10 million on to the £60 million that has already been paid to former Icelandic Water trawlermen and their families 'Ministers listened to the points we put to them and they have...
  • JUST THE TICKET!
SHONA McISAAC HAS ASKED FOR ASSURANCES that Grimsby and Cleethorpes will get a direct train service to London following the nationalisation of the East Coast main line. National Express - who hold the franchise to run trains on the East Coast Main Line - had been in negotiations to operation one daily return service from North East Lincolnshire to London's King's Cross. Plans had been drawn up to have a morning train to London with an evening return. However, after failing to renegotiate the terms of the franchise, National Express had told the Government that it would no longer be...
  • SCOUT BAN LIFTED
HOUSE OF COMMONS AUTHORITIES HAVE RELENTED and lifted a ban on allowing the Cub Scouts to use Parliament's Westminster Hall to lobby MPs on 15 July - St Swithin's Day - as part of their Stop the Rain Tax campaign against increases in water charges for voluntary groups. Officials at the House of Commons had cancelled the booking stating that the youngsters were 'ineligible to vote'. One hundred Cub Scouts had been due to lobby Parliament. Following the ruling, MPs tabled a parliamentary motion protesting against the decision and wrote to the Speaker asking him to lift the ban. The...
